When I speak of Past Trauma, i refer to the Psychological and emotional damage that is left behind from an extremely stressful event, which can destroy your sense of security, leaving you with a sense of disconnection, helplessness, and confusion. When I say Getting Past Trauma, I mean using your own brain to make the changes internally needed, using NLP, CBT, & EMDR.
Psychological trauma can leave you finding life difficult, revisiting the past resulting in feelings and anxiety that won’t go away.
It can also leave you feeling numb, disconnected, and unable to trust other people. There are tried and tested methods of helping with ptsd.
The good news is by the use of EMDR, NLP, and CBT, your responses can be easily changed into something more supportive.
Your responses are NORMAL reactions to ABNORMAL events, they can be as unique as you are.
Traumatic experiences do not have to have a physical element, and cause us to feel overwhelmed, isolated and not in control, especially when it the experience involves an actual or perceived threat to life, it is our subjective experience of the event that makes us feel a certain way.
When we 're-present' memories of events to ourselves, we can recall the feelings we associated to the event. Our memories over time do change, and with EMDR, NLP and CBT we can change our associations to that memory, and therefore our feelings.
Generally speaking trauma can be caused by:
such as an accident, injury, or attack, especially if it was violent, unexpected or occured in childhood.
such as being in a bullying or violent home, suffering from a long term illness, or experiencing negative comments from a perceived authority figure
We are all unique, so what is traumatic for one is not for another, other causes can include: relationship breakups, death of a relative, humiliating experiences, suffering agressive behaviour, and medical procedures in younger life, this list is not exhaustive.
We can all experience trauma of one level or another, and some of the contributing factors seem to be
- An unstable or unsafe environment
- Separation from a parent
- Serious illness
- Intrusive medical procedures
- Sexual, physical, or verbal abuse
- Domestic violence
If someone suffers trauma in chidhood, the effect can be especially severe and long lasting. Children are developing their own personality and map of the world up to the age of around 7 years. If the trauma is not resolved, the feelings carry on into adulthood. No matter when the event happened, there are ways to overcome any feelings of pain, distress, loneliness etc. and develop a sense of closure and emotional balance, enabling new learning, development of trust and connection with others.
Effects of past trauma
As we are unique, our reactions to trauma is also unique, experiencing a wide range of physical and emotional reactions. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to think, feel, or respond, so don’t judge your own reactions or those of other people.
Emotional & psychological symptoms:
- Poor concentration
- Anger, irritability, mood swings
- Anxiety and fear
- Guilt, shame, self-blame
- Withdrawing from others
- Feeling sad or hopeless
- Feeling disconnected or numb
- Insomnia or nightmares
- Being startled easily
- Difficulty concentrating
- Racing heartbeat
- Edginess and agitation
- Aches and pains
- Muscle tension
We're all uniqure, and have a unique life story. in childhood we learn how to do things, and sometime our coping mechanisms do not keep up with modern life and it's challenges.
